Three #NextGenATP talents advanced to within one win of a main-draw spot at Roland Garros on Wednesday, when Federico Cina, Darwin Blanch and home favourite Thomas Faurel notched second-round qualifying wins at the clay major.
The 19-year-old Italian Cina downed former World No. 17 Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-4 to maintain his charge towards a Grand Slam main-draw debut. Awaiting Cina in the final qualifying round in Paris is Canada’s Alexis Galarneau, who defeated Pedro Boscardin Dias 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The 18-year-old Blanch eased past 15th-seeded Aussie Tristan Schoolkate 6-4, 6-4. The American made his major debut as a wild card at the 2025 US Open and will hope to seal his spot in another Grand Slam main draw by defeating Luka Pavlovic in the third qualifying round. Blanch is currently eighth in the PIF ATP Live Next Gen Race, although he is level on 127 points with ninth-placed Cina.
Meanwhile Frenchman Faurel continued to impress on the Paris clay with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Jay Clarke. Standing between the 20-year-old and a main-draw berth is eighth seed Dalibor Svrcina, who sank Federico Agustin Gomez 7-6(3), 6-2.
Among the other winners in Paris on Wednesday was Briton Toby Samuel, who ended David Goffin’s Roland Garros career with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win. The former No. 7 in the PIF ATP Rankings Goffin is competing in his final season on the ATP Tour.
