Nuno Borges advanced to the second round at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday after 10th seed Holger Rune was forced to retire.
The No. 12 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Rune called for the doctor after dropping the first set 2-6, and ultimately called the match after falling to a 0-3 deficit in the second. The 2023 Monte-Carlo finalist won just 21 per cent of his second-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, during the 42-minute contest.
Borges, who is making his main-draw debut at the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo, will face Pedro Martinez in the second round.
“I clearly saw that he wasn’t feeling great,” said Borges, who is now 1-2 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Rune. “I stayed really focused on my game and tried to not give him too much. I thought I did a good job with that.”
