Denis Shapovalov, who retired from his first-round match at Wimbledon late last month due to injury, provided an update on social media Monday.
"Update! A couple of weeks ago in my first-round match in Queens, I fractured my rib," Shapovalov posted on Instagram. "I gave my best, best efforts to try to play through Wimbledon where unfortunately I further sustained a shoulder injury during the match."
The Canadian trailed 3-6, 6-7(7) against Pablo Carreno Busta at the grass-court major before retiring. However, Shapovalov shared he is preparing to compete next week at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, where he is the defending champion.
Last year, the 27-year-old won the title at the ATP 250 event in Los Cabos without dropping a set.
"Together with my team, we have been working to get ready in time for Los Cabos," he added. Very happy to be back on court again and now gearing to be back in Mexico next week! 🇲🇽."
Shapovalov holds a 9-14 record this season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Earlier this year, the former No. 10 player in the PIF ATP Rankings reached the semi-finals at the ATP 500 event in Dallas and the quarter-finals in Munich.
