Jannik Sinner has a commanding lead atop the PIF ATP Rankings, sitting 3,430 points clear of Carlos Alcaraz. But the numbers do not tell the whole story. The battle for World No. 1 could tighten — with the top spot potentially up for grabs — during the North American hard-court swing.
The Italian is defending a hefty 3,200 points through the US Open while Alcaraz, by contrast, is defending just 60. In net terms, that leaves Sinner and Alcaraz in a virtual neck-and-neck battle to be World No. 1 the day after the US Open concludes. Whomever has the better run during the next two months will likely hold top spot after the year's final major.
Points Defending Through US Open
Player | Canada | Cincinnati | US Open |
Jannik Sinner | 200 | 1,000 | 2,000 |
Carlos Alcaraz | 0 | 10 | 50 |
Last year, Alcaraz did not play the ATP Masters 1000 event in Canada and then lost to Gael Monfils in his Cincinnati opener. Alcaraz then suffered a stunning second-round exit at the US Open, falling to Botic van de Zandschulp, collecting just 50 points in New York. Meanwhile, Sinner reached the quarter-finals in Canada, followed by a title run in Cincinnati and at Flushing Meadows.
The 23-year-old Sinner struck the latest blow in his rivalry with Alcaraz by winning Sunday's Wimbledon final against the Spaniard and improving to 5-8 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, after falling short in their previous four meetings. Now, Alcaraz can make up ground in Toronto and Cincinnati before arriving at the US Open, where World No. 1 honours might be up for contention for the first time this summer.
Sinner, the first Italian to become No. 1, has held the pole position for 58 consecutive weeks, the fourth-longest debut stint in PIF ATP Rankings history. Alcaraz, who became the youngest No. 1 following his 2022 US Open title, has held top spot for 36 total weeks in his career.

Following Wimbledon, Sinner holds a 26-3 season record while Alcaraz is 48-6, according to the Infosys ATP/Win Loss Index.
