Defending champion Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the China Open on Friday, citing an ongoing knee injury.
The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has not competed since he triumphed at Wimbledon in July, subsequently missing the entirety of the North American hard-court swing. Sinner is a two-time champion at the ATP 500 event in Beijing, having lifted the trophy in 2023 and 2025, either side of a run to the final in 2024.
“I want to send the warmest greetings to the Chinese fans,” Sinner said in a video on X. “I’m very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play in Beijing this year. My knee is not where I would like it to be and I’m not ready to compete yet.
“I will do everything possible to be there on court as soon as I can. What I miss the most is, of course, the tournament, the fans and the atmosphere. I’ve had great times there in the past, winning the title also last year. I’m very disappointed that I cannot defend it this year.”
The 2026 edition of the China Open in Beijing runs from 30 September - 6 October and features Top-10 players Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Flavio Cobolli, Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur in the field.
Sinner owns a 44-3 record in 2026, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, including ATP Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome to complete the Career Golden Masters.
