Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini are used to being at the forefront of Italian sporting history, and the two ATP Tour stars witnessed another momentous moment for their country on Sunday in Monza.
Sinner, the first Italian to reach No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, and Berrettini, who in 2021 became the first Italian to reach the men’s singles final at Wimbledon, watched on in Monza as Kimi Antonelli became the first home winner at the Italian Grand Prix since 1966.
The way Antonelli snapped Italy’s 60-year wait for a Monza winner was dramatic, with the 20-year-old surging from 19th on the starting grid to etch his name into his country’s sporting folklore. The F1 star, who was in Turin last November to support Sinner during his run to a second consecutive crown at the Nitto ATP Finals, was later congratulated by the 30-time tour-level champion.
“Congratulazioni Kimi!” wrote the 25-year-old Sinner on X. It is not the first time this season that Sinner has lauded Antonelli for his exploits on the race track: Sinner also congratulated Antonelli for his victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in March, on the same day he tasted trophy-winning success himself at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
