Jannik Sinner joined Rafael Nadal in the history books on Sunday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, becoming just the second man to sweep all three clay-court ATP Masters 1000 titles in a single season in series history (since 1990).
The World No. 1 completed a dominant European clay swing by capturing titles in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome over the past five weeks, dropping only three sets across the three tournaments.
Nadal, who won a record 26 clay-court Masters 1000 titles, achieved the same feat only once, in 2010, when he lifted trophies in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome during the same season.
Before this year, Sinner had reached just one clay-court Masters 1000 final, 12 months ago in Rome, where he fell to Carlos Alcaraz. Since then, however, the Italian has elevated his game to another level.
By triumphing in Rome, Sinner secured his 10th Masters 1000 crown and completed the Career Golden Masters, becoming only the second player after Novak Djokovic to win all nine Masters 1000 events.
Sinner’s clay-court run included victories against Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo final and Alexander Zverev in the Madrid championship match before he defeated Casper Ruud in Sunday’s Rome final. Remarkably, he has now won all 10 Masters 1000 finals of his career without dropping a set.
Alongside Sinner and Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz, Gustavo Kuerten and Marcelo Rios are the only players to have won three different clay-court Masters 1000 events.
The clay-court Masters 1000 events from 1990-2008 were Monte-Carlo, Hamburg and Rome. In 2009, Madrid replaced Hamburg as a clay-court Masters 1000.
