Jannik Sinner has passed Carlos Alcaraz in the pair’s ‘Big Titles’ race after winning the Internazionali d'Italia on Sunday in Rome.
The home favourite beat Casper Ruud at the Foro Italico for his 16th ‘Big Title’ – a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals.
After the Australian Open, Alcaraz led their battle 15 'Big Titles' to 11. But since then, Sinner has become the first player in ATP Masters 1000 series history (since 1990) to win the first five Masters 1000 crowns of the year, emerging victorious at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
The 24-year-old is just the second player to complete the Career Golden Masters, winning all nine Masters 1000 events. The only other man to accomplish the feat is Novak Djokovic, who completed his set in 2018 at the Cincinnati Open.
Having also lifted the trophy in Paris last November, Sinner extended his record for the longest Masters 1000 titles streak (6). The Italian became the seventh player to earn at least 10 Masters 1000 trophies, joining Djokovic (40), Rafael Nadal (36), Roger Federer (28), Andre Agassi (17), Andy Murray (14) and Pete Sampras (11).
