Jannik Sinner’s performance against Casper Ruud in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia quarter-finals will not soon be forgotten.
With the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings’ 6-0, 6-1 victory against the recent Mutua Madrid Open champion, Sinner has now won 11 consecutive matches against Top 10 opponents without losing a set.
Sinner has claimed 24 straight sets against Top 10 players, passing Bjorn Borg’s mark of 23 in 1978. The Italian is now chasing John McEnroe, who won 28 consecutive sets against the elite group during the 1984 season.
This was the fewest games won by a Top-10 player since No. 6 Kevin Anderson defeated No. 9 Kei Nishikori 6-0, 6-1 at the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals. It was the least on clay since No. 2 Djokovic beat No. 7 Thiem eight years ago in Rome.
Tennis Data Innovations' Performance Rating measures a player’s performance over the course of a match. Sinner’s Performance Rating against Ruud was a 9.62, the best mark of any player since the start of the 2024 season.
“It was an amazing match today from my side,” Sinner said. “Everything worked very, very well.”

Ruud was confident after claiming his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. But Sinner performed so well, the Norwegian produced his least-successful serving day on record.
Entering the match, Ruud’s lowest percentage of service points won in a tour-level match (not including ITF/Davis Cup stats) was 45 per cent in the 2022 Roland Garros final against Rafael Nadal.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Ruud won just 32 per cent of his service points (14/44) against Sinner at the Foro Italico. The World No. 7 earned just 19 per cent of his second-serve points (4/21).
Sinner knows that as well as he played, there is more work to be done in Rome. The top seed will face 11th seed Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.
“It was a great performance. Very happy about that,” Sinner said. “But things can change quickly. Every day is different. Tomorrow is a different opponent.”
Editor's Note: This story was updated to correct a stat. Sinner's win against Ruud marked the fewest games won in a match by a Top-10 player since No. 6 Kevin Anderson defeated No. 9 Kei Nishikori 6-0, 6-1 at the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals.
