Fans were treated to a rare sight on Monday when World No. 1s Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka shared the court for a spirited practice session on the Aorangi Grounds ahead of Wimbledon.
Sinner's preparations for the grass-court major are underway and he was immediately put through his paces by Sabalenka. After a lively warmup, the pair engaged in a friendly target challenge. The rules were simple: aim for a ball tube placed in front of your opponent and try to knock it over.
Sabalenka proved the sharper shot, toppling the tube in front of Sinner and sealing the win for her side. The penalty? A round of pushups for the Italian's team, much to the amusement of those courtside.
Following the session, Sinner shared a laugh with Sabalenka and her team before the WTA World No. 1 wrapped up her day with a smile.
“I hit with the best and then I am done,” Sabalenka said in a lighthearted message to Wimbledon’s social channels.
Sinner, the current No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, holds a 19-3 record on the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He arrives at Wimbledon following a quarter-final showing in Halle, where he fell to Alexander Bublik. The 23-year-old Italian enjoyed his deepest run at the All England Club in 2023, reaching the semi-finals.
Sabalenka is chasing her fourth major title and her first at Wimbledon. She has twice reached the semi-finals at SW19 and will look to take the next step when the Championships begin on 30 June.
