Jordan Lee, Coleman Wong, Jacob Fearnley and Joel Schwaerzler were among the players who earned victories in the first round of US Open qualifying on Monday.
American Lee, who received a wild card into qualifying, rallied past Mark Lajal 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round. Last month, the 16-year-old won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title and is now aiming to compete in the main draw at a major for the first time in his career.
Lee will next face Daniel Rincon, who earlier in the day came back from behind to upset fifth seed Titouan Droguet 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(1).
Second seed Wong, who recently reached the last four at the ATP 250 event in Los Cabos, outlasted Elmer Moller 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Fourth seed Fearnley, who last year fell to Alexander Zverev in the second round of the main draw, began his qualification bid this year with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory against Roberto Carballes Baena.
Elsewhere, #NextGenATP star Joel Schwaerzler battled past 20th seed Gustavo Heide 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The 19-year-old Austrian, who has claimed two ATP Challenger titles this season, is aiming to compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
In other action, American Mackenzie McDonald, who is aiming to make his ninth main-draw appearance at the hard-court major, defeated Stefano Napolitano 6-3, 7-5, while Jack Pinnington Jones defeated American Trevor Svajda 7-6(4), 6-4 and seventh seed Toby Samuel defeated Francesco Maestrelli 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-1.
The US Open main-draw action begins on Sunday, 30 August, with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic among those in action in New York City.
