Mariano Navone reached his second ATP Tour quarter-final of the season on Thursday at the Grand Prix Hassan II, where he defeated former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The Argentine, who advanced to his maiden tour-level final in February in Rio de Janeiro, rallied from a set and a break down to triumph in his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Wawrinka after two hours and 20 minutes.
"It was so tough for me," Navone said. "When I was a child, I watched the matches of him. I am very happy to play against him and I won so I am very happy with the win.
The seventh seed, currently No. 55 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, will meet Aleksandar Vukic in the quarter-finals. Vukic saved a match point in the decisive tie-break of a 7-6(11), 2-6, 7-6(9) win against second seed Sebastian Ofner to advance.
After picking up his first ATP Tour clay win by beating 2023 Marrakech finalist Alexandre Muller in the first round, the Australian battled for nearly three hours to advance to his fourth tour-level quarter-final.
Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena defeated Daniel Evans 6-4, 7-6(3) to earn his 100th tour-level win. The No. 64 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will next meet Nicolas Moreno De Alboran after the American downed David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first tour-level quarter-final.
"I'm really happy,” Carballes Baena said. “It's a good number I think. I will go for 200 and I will try to enjoy the tennis and keep coming."
