Alexander Zverev will return to court Tuesday at Wimbledon just three games from reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.
The second seed led 13th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 7-5, 3-3 Monday evening when play was suspended four minutes from the 11 p.m. curfew. The winner will face sixth seed Taylor Fritz for a spot in the semi-finals.
Zverev is competing in The Championships for the 10th time and has never previously advanced beyond the Round of 16. This is the fourth time he has made it this far at the grass-court major.
But the 29-year-old has never played at Wimbledon as a major champion before, and his confidence has shown on the SW19 lawns. Through three matches and two sets of the fourth round, Zverev has lost just one set in the tournament.
Zverev has been dominant on serve winning 81 per cent of his first-serve points and 71 per cent of his second-serve points. Lehecka has put pressure on the favourite at times, earning seven break points. But the Czech star has not converted any of those opportunities.
If the two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion completes his victory Tuesday, it will be the first time that more than one German man has reached the quarter-finals at a major since Wimbledon 14 years ago, when Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer accomplished the feat.
Should Zverev face Fritz, he will try to snap a seven-match losing streak against the American. Fritz leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 10-5.
