Not only is Alexander Zverev chasing his first Rolex Shanghai Masters title this week, the German’s result at the Chinese event has implications on his pursuit of becoming the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings.
The 29-year-old can overtake Jannik Sinner for the top spot on 2 November if he wins the Shanghai trophy and then makes the Vienna semi-finals later this month. If Zverev reaches the Shanghai final but falls in the championship match, he would become World No. 1 with a title run in Vienna.
Zverev, this year’s Roland Garros and US Open champion, has already secured ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours.
A seven-time ATP Masters 1000 champion, Zverev is looking to capture his first trophy at that level since 2024 at the Rolex Paris Masters. Boasting a 62-15 season record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Zverev will meet Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai semi-finals.
Entering the semi-finals, Zverev is at 10,070 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, 880 points behind Sinner. The Italian recently announced that he will not compete the rest of the season, citing a knee injury.
