Nickname is Eli.
Father introduced him to the sport at age 4 after watching Michael Chang play.
Father, Wondwosen, was a professional runner and is now an industry worker; mother, Kelem, is a doctor; brother, Mikael, is also on ATP Tour; brother,Rafael, is his coach.
Used to run as well, but didn't like to compete.
Speaks Ethiopian, Swedish and English.
Favourite shot is forehand and surface is clay.
Favourite tournament is Stockholm.
Idol growing up was Mike Tyson.
Enjoys watching movies.
If he wasn't a tennis player, he would have been a football player.
During COVID-19 pandemic, played an exhibition match against his brother, Mikael, in support of Red Cross’ Global COVID-19 Emergency Relief.
Underwent minor right elbow surgery in August 2019.

Broke into Top 200 in 2015, achieved career-high No. 105 in 2018 and ended 5 straight seasons as No. 1 Swede before being passed by little brother Mikael (2014-18) and returned to No. 1 Swede spot in 2024 and 2025.
Advanced to 1st ATP Tour QF at 2016 Gstaad, 1st ATP Tour SF at 2022 Pune as Q and advanced to Stockholm QF as WC in 2023 and 2025.
Made history as a teenager in 2015, becoming 2nd man on record to qualify for all 4 Grand Slam events in a calendar year (also Dancevic in 2011).
Captured 2016 Stockholm doubles title in team debut w/M. Ymer as 954th-ranked WC (d. Pavic/Venus 6-1 6-1).
Achieved career-high No. 5 in junior rankings, highlighted by run to 2012 Orange Bowl final (l. to Djere).
Owns 209-175 record on ATP Challenger Tour (6-6 in finals), winning titles at 2015 Caltanissetta, 2016 Barletta, 2017 Cordenons, 2017 and 2018 Mouilleron le Captif and 2018 Pune.
