Began a coaching relationship with Gunther Bosch in May 1987 after Bosch
parted ways with Boris Becker. He soon reached his first NGP final at
Livingston, N.J. where he lost to veteran Johan Kriek in three sets.
Improved his ATP ranking from 239 to 84 in 1987.
Began playing tennis at age nine. His father, Alexander, is a doctor
and his mother, Ana-Cornelia, is a nurse. His father is Rumanian and mother
is German.
He was ranked No. 1 in the Rumanian 14s and one year later moved to West
Germany.
He won the German National Singles title in 1986, the same year he was
ranked No. 1 in the 18s. He has represented Germany in European Team Cup
play.
Compiled a 21-19 match record, earned a career-high $118,406 and ranked
No. 88 on the ATP computer in 1988, his second top 100 finish.
Slipped to No. 160 on the ATP computer in 1989 with a 13-18 match record
