Participated as a practice player in 1984 US Davis Cup tie against Argentina. Suffered from Sherman's Disease, a congenital weakness in the lower back and often wears a rubber brace to give his back additional support. Has not been bothered by it since turning pro in 1986. Underwent a counseling and mental preparedness program at Stanford called the Edgar Phillips Mental Training Program which emphasizes maximizing positive energy and delves into electrochemical balances in the brain. Did not play his first tournament until age 13, and played first national event the following year. Has beaten Mats Wilander twice -- 1987 Scottsdale & 1988 Stockholm. Earned a career-high $185,038 and compiled a 36-19 match record while finishing a year-end best No. 29 on the ATP computer in 1988, his second straight top 50 finish. Coached by Jack Shore. Defeated Jimmy Connors in the second round at Wimbledon in 1989 en route to the quarterfinals, his best Grand Slam showing. Compiled a 12-14 match record and earned $108,090 in 1989 while ranking No. 67 on the ATP computer, his second top 50 in three years.
