  • Surrey native Danny Sapsford, who had a 10-year pro career (1989-1999), captured one ATP doubles title at 1996 Nottingham (w/Petchey) and reached two other finals at 1995 Bordeaux (w/Holm) and 1997 Nottingham (w/Wilkinson). He played two Davis Cup ties for Great Britain in 1990-1991, amassing a 2-1 record. As a No. 595-ranked qualifier, he played his last match against Pete Sampras on Court One at 1999 Wimbledon, losing to the American 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round. He had previously received six Wimbledon singles wild cards (1990-91, 1995-99). The right-hander also qualified for the 1991 US Open, reaching the second round (l. to Todd Martin). On the ATP Challenger Tour, he won eight doubles titles at 1994-Azores (w/Wilkinson), 1994-Dublin (w/Wilkinson), 1994-Jakarta (w/Foster), 1995-Newcastle (w/Foster), 1996-Bromma (w/Foster), 1996-Istanbul (w/Petchey), 1997-Manchester (w/Petchey) and 1997-Portoroz (w/Wilkinson), with one runner-up finish at 1997-Bristol (w/Petchey). He attained a career-high No. 83 doubles ranking (12 October 1998). Sapsford began playing tennis aged 10 and was the top British junior in 1987. He captured the under-12 and under-18 national titles and attended the LTA National Training School at Bisham Abbey. He won the 1998 British senior title (d. Weal). Sapsford enjoys football, golf and crossword puzzles. In retirement he once coached Lee Childs and now runs 'Bright Ideas for Tennis', a tennis charity that supports tennis clubs in the UK by increasing membership numbers and raising participation levels. He is married to Yukiko.
