    Born in the Netherlands and then moved to Canada at three months old.
    Spent eight years in Canada, then moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. (for three)
    before going back to the Netherlands (for six years). Moved back to Scotts-
    dale in 1986.
    Father, Hans, was a tennis coach in the Netherlands. Grew up playing
    with Richard Krajicek, the current Dutch No. 1 and ranked in Top 20.
    The middle member of the family with two older brothers (Emile, 29,
    Gunnar, 27) and one younger brother (Paco, 22) and sister (Natscha, 19).
    Graduated from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale after playing his
    junior and senior years.
    Planned to go to the University of Kentucky, but then went to Univ. of
    Oklahoma for one semester in 1987 before transferring to Arizona State Univ.
    for another semester. Never played in a collegiate match.
    Played in several money tournaments along the West Coast in 1992 before
    playing in four satellites in 1993. Former Indy 500 winner Arie Luywendijk
    provided funding in '93 to help his countryman get started on the pro level.
    Qualified in his first career Challenger event at Aptos in July 1994 and
    defeated Richard Matuszewski in the first round before losing in the second.
    Did not play the rest of the year (due to lack of funding). Prior to
    playing his only tournament in '94, spent four months (March to June) as a
    roofer.
    Earned a wildcard into the ATP Tour stop in Scottsdale by winning the
    Million Dollar Wild Card Challenge on Feb. 5, 1995. It is his first career
    ATP Tour outing.
