Shocked everyone at 1985 La Quinta by winning his first Super Series title as host pro (he respresents the club on the tour), as a wild-card entry, ranked 143. He defeated S. Davis, Aguilera, Benhabiles, Holmes and Pate in that event, raising his ranking all the way to 35 in one week. Only one player has won a Grand Prix Super Series event with lower ranking (Edmondson, '75-76 Australian Open). Ironically, he was forced to qualify at his next Grand Prix event, Fort Myers, because of his pre-La Quinta ranking, and was defeated in the first round of qualifying by his doubles partner Robert Van't Hof.
