    Began playing tennis at age 9...Ranked No. 1 in his city district in table tennis at age 11 and, a year later, went to the Dutch Tennis Training Institute where he attended for six years...The institute, supported by the Dutch Tennis Federation, included young future stars Jacco Eltingh, Hendrik-Jan Davids and Menno Oosting...Won the 12-under European Championship in doubles (w/Krajicek) in 1983 and four years later played on the Dutch World Youth Cup team, which finished runner-up to Australia...In 1989, won the 18-under Dutch Indoor Championship...In 1992, lost to Sander Groen in the Dutch Masters final...Father, Jan, works for the Dutch government; mother, Hetty, is a pre-school teacher.
