In a profession of nomads, Francisco Gonzalez is one of the most
traveled of all men. Born in Weisbaden, West Germany (where his father was
an officer in the U.S. military), he grew up in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, and
played his collegiate tennis in Ohio. In 1980, ranked 118, he had the best
tournament of his life, beating Jimmy Connors en route to the final of the
ATP Championships in Cincinnati. In 1984, he and Matt Mitchell claimed two
of their three doubles titles in Ohio (Cincinnati and Cleveland). The
likeable Gonzalez was born on the U.S. military base in Weisbaden, West
Germany (as was John McEnroe), where his father-now a civil engineer-was
stationed. Francisco took up tennis at age 10, eventually earning a scholar-
ship to Ohio State, where he competed from 1975 through 1977, and earned All-
America honors. He was also a two time Big Ten Conference singles champion.
The latest move in his life was occasioned by the chance to play Davis
Cup. Paraguay had never before fielded a team in international competition,
for there was not another player to team with Victor Pecci. In the country's
Davis Cup debut (1982), Gonzalez and Pecci led Paraguay to the American Zone
championships, and hence a berth in the World Group. In 1984, with an upset
of New Zealand in the first round, they earned their way back into the
World Group. He is 7-16 in singles and 12-5 in doubles lifetime. A member of
the Paraguayan Davis Cup team since 1982.
He married his high school sweetheart, Vivian.
