Career

Nickname is Jerry after the cartoon character. "Tom and Jerry has been around for a long time and I’d say that was my favourite show," says Shang. "I think my parents would like me to be as smart as the mouse Jerry."
Father, Yi, was a professional football player; mother, Na, was a world champion table tennis player.
Started playing tennis at age 5 because his parents thought tennis would suit him well.
Favourite shot is forehand, surface is clay and tournament is Roland Garros.
Idols growing up were Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Also enjoys golf and running.
Says that he would probably be a golfer if he wasn't a tennis player.
Favourite football team is Real Madrid.
Started training abroad at age 13 and currently trains at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, USA.

Became 1st Chinese teenager to break into Top 100 in PIF ATP Rankings history (since 1973) in May 2024 and achieved career-high No. 47 in October 2024 after winning 1st ATP Tour title in Chengdu (d. No. 19 Musetti), becoming just the second Chinese man to win an ATP Tour title (Wu Yibing, 2023 Dallas).
Earned biggest wins over career over No. 16 Tiafoe to reach 1st ATP Tour SF in Hong Kong, No. 14 Shelton en route to 2nd SF at 2024 Atlanta and No. 10 Khachanov to reach 2025 ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai 3R.
Advanced to 2024 Australian Open 3R and became 1st Chinese man in 3R of that event in the Open Era.
Qualified for the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF.
Made ATP Tour debut at 2022 Rio de Janeiro as a WC, before earning 1st tour-level win at 2023 Australian Open, beating Otte in 1R as Q (l. to Tiafoe in 2R).
Owns 37-27 record on ATP Challenger Tour, highlighted by 1st title at 2022 Lexington.
