He took up tennis at age six, two years after he began playing ice
hockey. In fact, hockey seemed to be his sport because his father, Karel Sr.
played and coached hockey in Czechoslovakia and no one in the family (Karel
is the only child) played tennis.
His father is a businessman and his mother, Bozema, is a doctor.
Hobbies include watching soccer and ice hockey.
Compiled a 57-31 match record in 30 tournaments and earned a career-high
$650,350 in 1991. Finished a career-high No. 8 on the ATP Tour that year and
won a personal best four titles.
Surpassed $1 million in career prize money by winning his fifth career
singles title at Hamburg on May 12, 1991, defeating Magnus Gustafsson in five
sets.
Qualified for his first year-end ATP Tour Championship in 1991.
