  • Lennart Bergelin, a fine tennis player and winning 1975 Davis Cup captain for Sweden, will always be remembered as coach to Bjorn Borg, a winner of 11 major singles titles, from 1971 to 1983. As a player Bergelin captured the first of 20 Swedish national titles � nine singles and 11 doubles � aged 20, won 63 out of 83 Davis Cup ties and clinched the 1948 Roland Garros doubles title with Jaroslav Drobny. He also reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals on four occasions. In 1950 he was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal, for the most significant Swedish sports achievement of the year. He went on to captain the Davis Cup team between 1971 and 1976, giving Borg his debut as a 15 year old against New Zealand�s Onny Parun in 1972. He was a member of the International Clubs of Australia, France, Great Britain, Sweden, United States and Germany. In 2006, Bergelin was invited back to the Monte-Carlo County Club, where he had spent a lot of time training Borg, to take part in the tournament�s centenary celebrations. He was married to Rose Marie, the couple had three sons. He died on 4 November 2008 in Stockholm. - November 2008
