  • Martin Jaite used his superior fitness and tactical nous to make up for a lack of power during his playing career.

Having spent his formative years in Buenos Aires and Barcelona, Jaite fine-tuned his single-handed backhand and defensive game to great effect, on clay courts, before turning pro in 1983. He rose more than 100 places in the space of 12 months and by 1985 ranked inside the Top 20.

Jaite’s best Grand Slam championship result came at 1985 Roland Garros, when he lost to Ivan Lendl in the quarter-finals. Ten of his 12 singles titles came on clay and, on 9 July 1990, he became just the sixth South American in ATP history to rank in the Top 10.

Jaite, who reached the 1988 Seoul Olympics quarter-finals (l. to Gilbert), has played an important role in tennis in Argentina since his retirement. He has served as an ATP Challenger Tour and an ITF Futures tournament director, as coach to David Nalbandian and since 2011 has been Argentina’s Davis Cup captain.
