In a golden era for Swedish tennis, following the retirement of his idol Bjorn Borg, Peter Lundgren was one of seven Swedes ranked in the world's Top 25. A fan of football and ice hockey, Lundgren did not start playing tennis until he was 10. During a 13-season pro career, living in Sundsvall, Sweden and Monte Carlo, Monaco, Lundgren won three ATP World Tour titles from six finals. He was named the ATP's Most Improved Player in 1987. Having won the first set of his matches, Lundgren compiled a 105-22 record (.827).

Having retired in 1995, aged 30, Lundgren first worked with Marcelo Rios in 1996. He helped the Chilean into the Top 10, then from 1997 worked with juniors at the Swiss Tennis Federation. From November 2000 until the end of 2003, Lundgren travelled full-time with Roger Federer, helping him to 10 ATP World Tour titles and his first Grand Slam championship at 2003 Wimbledon. He helped Marat Safin clinch the 2005 Australian Open title. From September 2006 to August 2008, Lundgren was appointed to coach the Great Britain Davis Cup team and worked with Alex Bogdanovic.
