He played No. 2 on the Clemson Tigers tennis team and was an All-America
in 1985-86 in singles and doubles. He reached the RD 16 at the 1985 NCAA
Tournament, losing to John Ross. He reached the doubles quarterfinals (w/
Brandon Walters). The team finished No. 4 in the country.
He won the 1985 ITCA Indoor doubles title (w/Walters).
He was a member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup team in 1985 and won college's Van Nostrand Memorial award in 1986.
He finished fourth on the 1984 Canadian satellite circuit.
The son of Polish parents both of whom emigrated to the U.S., Richard
began playing tennis at age 10.

Ranked No. 90 on the ATP computer rankings in 1986, but finished at 197
the following year. Jumped to a year-end best 56 in 1988, compiling an 11-10
match record.
Broke into the top 50 for the first time on Oct. 24, 1988 at No. 49 from
64 after reaching the semifinals at the Tokyo Indoor. He jumped from No. 166
into the top 50 in one month after also finishing runner-up at Sydney to
Zivojinovic.
Slipped to No. 119 on the ATP computer in 1989, but earned a career-high
$120,610.
