At age 6, started practicing with coaches from DutchTennis Federation.
Full name is Thiemo Carsten Jannick de Bakker.
Mother Carlieke, introduced her son to tennis when shewould bring him to local club and he taught himself howto play.
Has older brother, Yori and younger brother, Kayo.
Earned his first swimming diploma at age 3 and startedplaying at a soccer club at age 4.
Ruud Thijssen, father of Nicole Thijssen (played for juniorFed Cup team) was coach at his club and recognized histalent. He let Thiemo join practice even though he was stillvery young.
Considers clay his best surface and forehand as best shot.

The Dutchman finished 2015 in Top 100 for 1st time since 2010.Achieved career-high ranking of No. 40 on July 19, 2010soon after advancing to Wimbledon 3R. Broke into Top 100on Nov. 2, 2009 following run to Seoul, KOR Challenger SF(l. to Lacko). Exactly 6 years later, returned to Top 100 onNov. 2, 2015 after 112 straight weeks between No. 101 andNo. 200. As a junior, ended 2006 as World No. 1
Reached 3 ATP World Tour SFs: 2010 Barcelona (d. No. 10Tsonga, l. to No. 8 Soderling), 2010 New Haven (l. toStakhovsky) and 2013 Båstad (d. No. 6 Berdych, l. toBerlocq).
