Alcaraz could become the first player to do this...

Carlos Alcaraz has established himself as one of the leading Grand Slam players of his generation, and in 2026 he became the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Alcaraz’s major titles have come on all three surfaces, with victories at the US Open (2022, 2025), Roland Garros (2024, 2025), Wimbledon (2023, 2024) and the Australian Open (2026). Now, the 23-year-old has an opportunity to add another distinction to that record. By successfully defending his US Open title this year, he would become the only man in the Open Era to successfully defend Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.

Men who have defended Grand Slam singles titles on more than one surface (Open Era)

Alcaraz, the No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, is one of only 10 men in the Open Era to have successfully defended Grand Slam titles on two different surfaces. The others are Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz has already completed successful title defences at Wimbledon, where he won in 2023 and 2024, and Roland Garros, where he was champion in 2024 and 2025. With those achievements, he placed himself alongside Borg as the only men to have defended Grand Slam titles on both clay and grass.

The US Open has already played an important role in Alcaraz’s career. He owns a 24-3 record at Flushing Meadows and won his first Grand Slam title there in 2022, when he became the youngest man to reach No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings at 19 years of age.

Alcaraz returns to New York in 2026 after recovering from a wrist injury suffered in April. He returned to competition this week in the US Open mixed doubles, partnering Serena Williams, marking his first competitive action in more than four months.

The second seed will begin his US Open campaign on Monday against Roman Safiullin, with their Lexus ATP Head2Head series level at 1-1.
