Arthur Fery continued his dream run at Wimbledon on Wednesday by defeating the No. 10 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Flavio Cobolli, to reach the semi-finals. In doing so he added his name to the list of wild cards to make their mark on the Grand Slam stage.
Goran Ivanisevic holds the record for the best run at a major by a wild card, having triumphed at Wimbledon in 2001. With his quarter-final victory, the World No. 114 Fery became just the fourth player to reach a men’s singles semi-final at a Grand Slam as a wild card.
Wild cards to reach men’s singles SFs at a major
| Event | Player | Final Result |
| 1991 US Open | Jimmy Connors | SFs |
| 1992 Roland Garros | Henri Leconte | SFs |
| 2001 Wimbledon | Goran Ivanisevic | Champion |
| 2026 Wimbledon | Arthur Fery | TBC |
Ivanisevic’s memorable 2001 title run also tops this list, and no other wild card until Fery this year had reached the semi-finals.
The lowest-ranked player to reach the men’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon (since 1985, from when full ranking data is available) is Vladimir Voltchkov, who was World No. 237 when he made a last-four run in 2000. Ivanisevic, who was No. 125 when he won the title in 2001, is second on the list, while No. 114-ranked Fery is third.
Fery is just the ninth player ranked outside the Top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings to reach a men’s singles semi-final (since 1985). It did not happen for nearly 20 years between No. 125 Ivanisevic’s 2001 Wimbledon triumph and No. 114 Aslan Karatsev’s 2021 run to the Australian Open semi-finals. Now, it has happened at two majors in a row, following No. 104 Matteo Arnaldi’s Roland Garros semi-final run last month and now Fery’s march to the last four at Wimbledon.
