Taylor Fritz is back where he’s becoming a regular guest: the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The American reached the last eight for the fourth time in five years with a business-like 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-4 win against 10th seed Alexander Bublik on Monday.

The American is chasing his first major title this week and has once again found himself at the latter stages of The Championships following an impressive serving display against Bublik. Last year’s semi-finalist struck 22 aces and won 90 per cent of his first-serve points to advance after one hour and 41 minutes.

"When I got my opportunities to break, I took them, and when he got in some service games, had some looks in some scary moments," Fritz said. "I played really well to get myself out of those situations. When you have two guys serving big and short points, it is going to come down to key moments in the match and I thought I played them really well."

Fritz missed the bulk of the European clay swing due to injury, losing both matches he played on the surface at Roland Garros and in Geneva. However, the 28-year-old has looked accomplished once again on the grass and is now just one win from matching his best Wimbledon result.

Fritz, a five-time tour-level champion on the surface, has now won 11 of his 13 grass-court matches this year, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, having reached finals in Halle and Stuttgart, where he also defeated Bublik.

The No. 7 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, who has also dropped just one set through his four matches in south west London, now leads Bublik 5-4 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, with this their first meeting at a major.

Into his fifth quarter-final of the season, Fritz will next play Roland Garros champion Alexander Zverev or Jiri Lehecka. Fritz has won his past seven matches against Zverev (10-5), while he leads Lehecka 4-2.

Bublik battled past Thanasi Kokkinakis and Frances Tiafoe in five-set marathons to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for just the second time but was second best for large periods of his serve-dominated clash with Fritz on No. 1 Court.
