Hubert Hurkacz announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon on Friday afternoon due to irritation of his synovial membrane.

One year ago, the Polish star tore his right meniscus during his second-round Wimbledon match against Arthur Fils. Hurkacz will not be able to compete in the grass-court major this year at all.

It All Adds Up

“Over the past few weeks, you’ve seen me on court through both the highs and the more challenging moments. Unfortunately, today I have to share some difficult news,” Hurkacz wrote in a statement. “After careful consideration and consultation with my team, we have made the decision to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon.

“During my preparations, my body reacted with irritation of the synovial membrane. This is a part of the ongoing recovery process following my recent surgery and requires rest and appropriate treatment.”

The 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist, currently No. 39 in the PIF ATP Rankings, lost in the first round at Roland Garros to Joao Fonseca and began his grass-court season in ’s-Hertogenbosch, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut before withdrawing from his second-round match.

Hurkacz owns a 15-11 record this season. He helped Poland to the United Cup final at the start of the year and recently reached the Geneva final.

“It is not easy to step away from such a prestigious tournament,” Hurkacz said. “But I know this is the right decision for my long-term health and performance.”

Hurkacz was set to play Briton Billy Harris in the first round. He will be replaced by lucky loser Dusan Lajovic, who will face Harris for the first time in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
