Rafael Jodar is in danger of suffering a second-round defeat to former Top-10 star Pablo Carreno Busta at Wimbledon. Carreno Busta led his fellow Spaniard 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 1-2 Wednesday when play was suspended for the evening.
This is Jodar's first appearance in Wimbledon as a professional. The 19-year-old made the second round earlier this year in his Australian Open debut and then the quarter-finals in his Roland Garros debut.
The 23rd seed has won just 30 per cent of his second-serve points and has only converted two of his nine break points against his 34-year-old opponent.
It is not the first time Carreno Busta has been in a winning position against Jodar. In the fourth round at Roland Garros, the Spanish veteran led the teen two sets to none, but was unable to finish the job.
Carreno Busta, who lost in the first round in his first seven appearances at Wimbledon, is now one set from avoiding another Jodar comeback and earning a spot in the third round, where Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki awaits.
The Jodar-Carreno Busta match was not the only clash suspended. Brandon Nakashima, the 28th seed, and Jan-Lennard Struff will return to court tied at two sets apiece. Nakashima leveled their encounter at 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-7(5), 7-6(6).
