Medvedev following Wimbledon R3 loss: 'I should do better'

Daniil Medvedev's Wimbledon campaign ended in the third round on Friday when the eighth seed fell 6-7(4), 6-7(5), 5-7 to Jan-Lennard Struff at the grass-court major.

Medvedev led by a break in all three sets, including a commanding 5-2 lead in the third, but failed to capitalise on his opportunities. The 30-year-old converted just four of the 12 break points he earned before suffering a straight-sets defeat. Following his loss, the two-time semi-finalist provided an honest assessment of his performance.

“I should do better,” Medvedev shared. “I didn't manage to serve exactly the way I wanted. I didn't manage to play the way I wanted in the tie-breaks, because even if you're serving for the set or whatever, you can still win the set after. He was better in the important points today. I am really disappointed.”

While the former World No. 1 has won two titles this season, reached the Indian Wells final with a victory against Carlos Alcaraz and earned a 30-11 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, he has failed to advance beyond the fourth round in each of his past seven Grand Slam appearances, including a first-round exit at Roland Garros and a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open.

Medvedev admitted his season has been a roller coaster, but he was hoping to forge a solid run at the grass-court major, where he reached the semi-finals in 2023 and 2024.

“Up and down, and a bit more on the down side lately,” Medvedev said. “But what can I say? I'm really disappointed, because I felt like I could potentially do well at Wimbledon. It's not only about the result. It's also about the game you play. I know that when I play well, I can make a good result or a good match.

“Today was not the case… But there were some good moments this season, as well. The only way is to go forward and try to do better next time.”

Despite the defeat, Medvedev asserted his desire to compete remains strong. The former No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings shared he is determined to learn from his losses for the future.

“The principal is the competition and I just want to win every time I step on the court,” he said. “It's a bit disappointing for me that before I feel like there were matches I lost, there were matches I won. But I felt like I was good in finding solutions. Especially kind of the more the stakes, the Grand Slams and stuff like this, the more I would be able to do it.

“Now it's not exactly the case. It's a bit more up and down, as I said about the season, as well. But again, the only thing I can do is try better next time, and if it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out.”
