Portugal’s Jaime Faria ended Grigor Dimitrov’s Roland Garros qualifying hopes at the first-round stage on Tuesday, when he defeated the former World No. 3 in Paris.
Faria earned a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(10-6) victory to reach the second round of qualifying. Dimitrov was a quarter-finalist at the clay-court major just two years ago but was competing this week at No. 170 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
It is the first time Dimitrov has failed to play in the main draw at Roland Garros since 2010. The Bulgarian served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and led by a break in the decider but was unable to prevail.

Faria came through qualifying at the Australian Open earlier this season and will try to repeat that feat in the French capital, where he next meets Colton Smith. American Smith beat Ecuadorian Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5, 6-1.
Coleman Wong also advanced on Tuesday, downing Billy Harris 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(10-7). The 21-year-old was made to work hard for victory, eventually triumphing on his ninth match point. Wong is aiming to make his Roland Garros main draw debut, having lost in qualifying in 2024 and 2025.
Borna Gojo and Gustavo Heide were also winners in rainy Paris. Croatian Gojo beat Frenchman Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg 6-3, 6-4, while Brazilian Heide downed Frenchman Dan Added 6-3, 6-0.
Dusan Lajovic, who reached the third round in Paris in 2019, lost to Jurij Rodionov. The Austrian triumphed 6-2, 7-5. It is the first time Lajovic has not competed in the main draw since 2013.
