Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz have already secured their places at the Nitto ATP Finals, and more stars have an opportunity to join them during the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
Ben Shelton arrives in Shanghai in fourth place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, having reached his first major final at the US Open last month. The 23-year-old American is aiming to compete at the Nitto ATP Finals for the second consecutive year and can secure his place in Turin by reaching the fourth round at the hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event.
Shelton has fond memories of Shanghai, where he reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in 2023, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The lefty opens against Daniel Altmaier and could face Arthur Gea or Ugo Humbert in the third round. If Shelton comes through that section, he will seal his place at the season finale.
The American, who discussed his motivation to return to Turin earlier this week, has put himself in a strong qualification position, having won four tour-level titles in 2026, highlighted by his second Masters 1000 crown in Canada.

Flavio Cobolli can also qualify this fortnight, though his path is tougher. The Italian would need to win his first Masters 1000 title in Shanghai to secure his place in Turin.
Cobolli is in fifth place in the Live Race and is chasing his maiden appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, with the prospect of making his debut in front of his home fans in Turin providing added motivation. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a standout season, reaching the final at Roland Garros, the semi-finals in Cincinnati and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, while also lifting the ATP 500 trophy in Acapulco.
Cobolli suffered a first-round exit in Beijing last week but will look to bounce back in Shanghai, where he opens against Adrian Mannarino.
Three doubles teams can also qualify during the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic can book their spot if they reach the second round in Shanghai, while Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori can return to Turin if they advance to the semi-finals at the hard-court event.
The 2024 Nitto ATP Finals champions Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz will seal their spot in Turin if they lift the trophy in Shanghai.
The Nitto ATP Finals will be held from 15-22 November.
