Ben Shelton, Learner Tien and Brandon Nakashima have all advanced to the semi-finals of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, combining to deliver a slice of American tennis history in Montreal.
It is the first time since 1992 that three Americans have reached the semi-finals of the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event. That year, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and MaliVai Washington made the last four.
Shelton is bidding to successfully defend his title after capturing the biggest trophy of his career at last year’s event in Toronto. The World No. 10 will face Tien in the semi-finals, with the 20-year-old holding a 2-0 Lexus ATP Head2Head advantage over Shelton, having won each of their two prior meetings in Mallorca last year and Indian Wells earlier this season.
The defending champion has been imperious in Montreal, reaching the semi-finals without dropping a set. Shelton has defeated Jenson Brooksby, Zizou Bergs, Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik to reach the last four. Tien, meanwhile, has overcome Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul, Thiago Agustin Tirante and Daniel Merida.
On the other side of the draw, Nakashima faces #NextGenATP star Rafael Jodar in a clash between two first-time Masters 1000 semi-finalists. With his run so far, the 25-year-old Nakashima has risen six spots to No. 25 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is guaranteed to achieve a new career high when the rankings are updated.
Semi-final action in Montreal takes place Wednesday, 12 August.
