Jannik Sinner has the opportunity to further strengthen his grip on World No. 1 at Wimbledon, but World No. 3 Alexander Zverev remains within distance of applying pressure in the PIF ATP Rankings if he progresses further.

Heading into Friday’s semi-finals, Sinner sits atop the PIF ATP Live Rankings with 12,250 points, more than 4,000 points clear of Zverev, who is currently No. 3 with 7,980 points. The Italian can extend his advantage even further during the final stages of his title defence at the All England Club.

If Sinner defeats Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, he will jump to 12,750 points and, with a successful title defence, the 24-year-old will rise to 13,450 points and give him an even greater cushion at the top of the rankings.

Sinner, the four-time major champion, has spent 79 weeks at the summit, and next week he will begin his 80th to match Lleyton Hewitt’s mark for the 10th-most weeks at No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history.

Standing in Sinner’s way on Friday is Djokovic, whom he leads 6-5 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series. Yet the Serbian won their most recent meeting in five sets in the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January.

While Sinner is chasing more separation at the top, the picture would change dramatically if he falls short in the semi-finals and Zverev, who triumphed at Roland Garros last month, completes a title run.

Zverev, currently No. 3 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, will move past Carlos Alcaraz and into second place with 8,480 points if he defeats British wild card Arthur Fery in the semi-finals. Should the German go on to lift his first Wimbledon trophy, he would climb to 9,180 points and move closer to World No. 1 Sinner.

A Zverev title would not immediately threaten Sinner’s World No. 1 position, but it would significantly close the gap and provide the German with momentum heading into the second half of the season, when he could look to challenge Sinner for the top spot.

If Zverev wins the title and Sinner loses in the semi-finals, the German will have closed the gap to Sinner to 3,070 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

During last year’s North American hard-court swing, Zverev reached the semi-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati and is defending 400 points at each event in 2026. The German did, however, fall in the third round of the US Open last year and is defending just 100 points at the hard-court major, where he previously reached the final in 2020.

Last year, Sinner did not compete in Canada, but the Italian did reach the final in Cincinnati and the US Open, so will have 1,950 points to defend at both of those events this year.

For now, Sinner controls his own destiny. With a strong finish to his title defence at Wimbledon, he would not only strengthen his hold on World No. 1, but also bring more historic ranking milestones into view.
