Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli contested an absorbing five-set encounter on Sunday at Roland Garros. The four-hour, 16-minute clash, which Zverev ultimately won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 to claim his maiden major title, threw up a series of interesting statistical angles.

Zverev and Cobolli’s clash marked the third consecutive year that the Roland Garros title showdown has gone to five sets. In 2024, Zverev led Carlos Alcaraz by two sets to one before the Spaniard rallied to clinch his first title at the clay major. A year later, Alcaraz memorably saved three championship points and came from two sets down to stun Jannik Sinner in one of the greatest major finals in history.

The No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Zverev entered Sunday’s final with an 0-3 record in Grand Slam finals. By downing Cobolli, the 29-year-old joined eight-time major champion Andre Agassi, 2021 Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic and 2020 US Open champion Thiem in capturing his first major trophy in his fourth final.

Cobolli defies Zverev‘s tie-break trend… but it’s not enough
Zverev would have had good reason to feel confident after he twice rallied from a break down to force a tie-break in the fourth set against Cobolli. The German was 26-2 in tie-breaks at Roland Garros, with his only tie-break losses coming in his 2022 semi-final against Rafael Nadal and a 2019 first-round clash with John Millman.

Yet Cobolli produced something special to ensure he added a third dent in Zverev’s tie-break record on the Parisian clay. The Italian rallied from 1/3 down and sealed the fourth set with a stunning forehand winner on the run.

Zverev bolsters fifth-set tally
Even after losing that fourth set, however, Zverev still had an impressive history in Roland Garros marathons to hold on to heading into the decider. By outlasting Cobolli on Sunday, he improved to 11-2 in fifth sets at the clay-court major, and by accelerating to victory Zverev moved joint-second on the list of most five-set victories at Roland Garros in the Open Era. The German holds a 24-15 record in fifth sets overall, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Break points galore
Despite the disappointment of defeat in his maiden major final, the 24-year-old Cobolli can reflect on a breakthrough two weeks in Paris. The resilience he displayed in Sunday’s final is reflected in the fact the Italian faced 21 break points compared to Zverev facing just eight — yet he still managed to push the World No. 3 the distance. On Monday, Cobolli will rise four spots to No. 10 in the PIF ATP Rankings, making him a Top-10 player for the first time.
