Father is deceased. Mother, Pinuccia, and sister, Ilaria, own a gym in
Milan, where the family comes from.
Ranked No. 8 among Italian juniors in 1991 after winning titles in
Florence, Salsomaggiore and Alessandra.
Enjoys playing on all surfaces and considers himself a baseliner.
Formerly trained at Le Pleiadi in Moncalieri. Now trains with Walter
Bertini at the Bertini Academy in Milan (began in September 1994).
In May 1995, qualified for his first career ATP Tour tournament at Rome,
defeating No. 9 Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the first round and Roberto Carretero
before losing to Stefan Edberg in the third round. Jumped from No. 411 to a
career-high (at time) No. XXX.
