At 6-foot-6, one of the most imposing figures on the tour. Earned All- America honors at the University of Arkansas in 1980-81. He also won the Southwest Conference singles title. A member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup team in 1981. In his first full year on the tour in 1982, he broke the top 20 and finished the year at No. 30 on the ATP computer rankings, a year-end career best. He won the 1982 ATP Newcomber of the Year award and earned a career- high $140,216. As a child he suffered from Osgood's Schlatter's disease, a condition that affects the knees that involves accelerated bone growth. He is the son of a general surgeon.
