Turned pro full-time in 1987 and turned in a fine performance, reaching the semifinals at Lyon and quarterfinals at Stratton Mountain (d. Kriek, S. Davis). Also won his first doubles title at Auckland and runner-up in two. Played his college tennis at Pepperdine University where he was a four- time All-America from 1983-86. Won the 1984 and 1985 NCAA doubles title (w/ DiLaura). A member of the 1984 Olympic team and the 1986 U.S.Junior Davis Cup team. After a disappointing 1988 season when he finished No. 366, improved to a then career year-end best No. 110 and earned $78,571 in 1989. Had 9-8 record. Qualified at Singapore in April 1989, ranked No. 397 on the ATP computer and went on to win the tournament, defeating No. 2 seed Amos Mansdorf in the final 6-1, 7-5. He jumped to No. 180 the following week. 1992 was # 1 on the ATP Doubles Rankings as a doubles finalist at both the US and Australian Opens. The following year he reached the 4th round in singles at the Australian Open. Has been a USTA National Coach as well as the personal coach of Alex O'Brien, Xavier Malisse (who he coached to his first ATP title) and Mardy Fish.
