The likeable Princeton graduate staged an admirable comeback in 1984 after knee surgery had kept him off the tour for 18 months. The rangy Lapidus had been working his way through the qualifyings finally getting his big break at North Conway, where he beat Aaron Krickstein before a strained back muscle contributed to a quarterfinal loss. Jay plays a power game, yet prefers clay courts, where his topspin backhand is most effective. Jay earned his degree in psychology, doing studies on bar feeding of rats.
