Moved to Palm Beach, Fla. from his native Puerto Rico (Santurce) at age six. Improved his ATP computer ranking by over 250 places in 1987, moving from 363 to 102. Began improvement with help of coach Craig Wittus, a former pro on the tour. He qualified at Stratton Mountain in 1987 and reached the quarterfinals, beating Tim Mayotte and Slobodan Zivojinovic en route. Biggest win came over Miloslav Mecir in 1st round at Cincinnati in 1988. Played at Florida State from 1981-85 and studied psychology, finally earning his Bachelor of Science in May of 1993. Inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1999. Compiled a 22-20 match record and earned a career-high $99,994 in 1988. Having turned pro in 1985, Rive competed on the ATP Tour until 1991, earning five singles titles and reaching a career high singles ranking of 57 in 1988. He also found success in doubles reaching the finals of four tournaments on his way to a top fifty doubles ranking. A member of the Puerto Rico Davis Cup team from 1992-1994. Personal: First college coaching position was as assistant men's tennis coach at his alma mater Florida State in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, Rive assumed his first head coaching position at University of Alabama. In 1997 he joined the USTA as men's national coach and captain of the Sunshine Cup team. Since 2000, he has been the head men's coach at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. until joining the staff at TBARM Racquet Club in 2006. He also manages JoeyRive.com , a collegiate tennis consulting website. Rive is married to the former Kimberly Shaw, a registered nurse and their two sons are Alexander (Zan) and Cameron.
