    Turned pro fulltime in 1985 after studying business management and
    psychology for three years at the University of Arkansas. An All-American in
    1984.
    He recovered fully from a teenage accident. He was hit by a car at age
    16, his heart stopped twice in five days -- once for a minute and once for 45
    seconds. He also had a broken arm, leg and ribs which resulted in a punctur-
    ed lung that was subsequently removed.
    He enjoyed his best professional season in 1987 as he won his first
    singles title in June at Bristol, England and followed up in October with a
    win at the Brisbane Indoor. He started the year off by reaching the quarter-
    finals at the Australian Open and Sydney/NSW. His ATP ranking improved from
    289 in 1986 to a year-ending best of 36.
    A member of the New Zealand Davis Cup team from 1985-present.
    Loves enjoying time on the beach and writes poetry. He boxed as young-
    ster.
    Compiled a 31-18 match record and earned a career-high $167,667 in 1987,
    but slumped to 16-28 and a year-end ranking of 119 in 1988.
    Doubles quarterfinalist (w/Derlin) at 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
    Underwent eye surgery in August 1989 and came back to reach the semi-
    finals at San Francisco, defeating Michael Chang 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter-
    finals.
