Petchey is married to Michelle and has two daughters, Nicole and Myah. Began playing tennis aged eight when his father Rod, who made a special racquet that his son could lift easily. Won first junior tournament aged 11, at Norbury, Surrey, and went on to capture four grass-court singles (14s, 16s, 18s) and eight national doubles titles before turning professional in 1988. Older sister, Caroline, and mother, Avril, have won several mother-daughter titles together in Spain. Spent 10 years as a professional player and competed at Wimbledon from 1988-1998. Best Grand Slam performance was reaching the 1997 Wimbledon third round (l. to Becker 63 63 62). Also appeared at 1994-95 US Open and 1995 Australian Open. He captured one ATP doubles title at Nottingham (w/Sapsford) and finished runner-up at 1994 Long Island (w/Florent). Finished a year-end best No. 163 in singles in 1993 as he won two Challenger titles (Recife, Adelaide) and reached another final (Jakarta). Earned a career-high $57,591. In 1994, broke through to reach his first career ATP Tour quarter-final in Mexico City on clay (l. to Muster 75 in the third set). Shortly after, upset No. 2 Michael Stich 7-6 in the third set in the first round of Sun City en route to the quarter-finals (first Top 10 win). Broke into the Top 100 for the first time in his career on June 20, 1994 (from 104 to No. 98) after reaching the Manchester quarter-finals. Reached two ATP singles semi-finals and three-quarter-finals overall. On the ATP Challenger Tour won three singles and two doubles trophies. Was a member of Great Britain�s Davis Cup squad 1991-97 (6-11 record) and beat Thomas Muster 62 36 76(5) 62 on his debut against Austria in a World Group qualifying round tie. Retired due to injury, aged 28, in August 1998, to concentrate on coaching and media work, having attained a career-high singles ranking of No. 80 (8 August 1994). Named LTA Manager of Men's National Training in September 2003 and resigned in July 2005 to coach Andy Murray, until April 2006. During his time with Murray, the Scot moved from No. 351 to No. 41 and captured his first ATP title in San Jose.
