Was forced to drop off the circuit in 1978 because of severe case of tennis elbow and took a teaching pro job in Houston. Attempted comeback in 1980 via satellite circuits. Sidelined again by throat disease (papilloma, that cause growths on the vocal chords). Had 16 operations to remove the growths, plus numerous injections of interferons. Resumed his comeback and in 1982 had his best year, reaching singles finals of Tampa (defeating Tanner) and Newport, made quarterfinals of four other tournaments, ranked 95 in singles for the year and made the semis of two events in doubles. Four-time All-America at Rice University. Won Orange Bowl, 1967. Silver Life Master Bridge Player, competing in National Bridge Tournaments annually. Manages several residential rental properties in Fort Worth, TX.
