Became the first player in Pepperdine history to win the NCAA singles title when he defeated Brian Garrow of UCLA 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 on May 28, 1988 at Athens, Ga. He finished the yuear ranked as the No. 1 collegiate player in the country with a 55-3 match record. He completed his career with a 163-39 match record (.807) from 1985-88 and was All-America in 1986 and '88. He helped his team to the NCAA finals in 1986 before losing to Stanford. He won three successive tournaments during his senior year in January 1988, jumping from No. 48 in the preseason rankings to the No. 1 position. A member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup team from 1984-86. He won 13 national junior championships and captured the 1984 Wimbledon Juniors doubles title (w/Ricky Brown). Began playing tennis at age 6. Turned pro in June 1988. Earned a career-high $30,015 and finished a year-end best No. 169 on the ATP computer, improving for the second second straight year (from 954 in '87 to 492 in '88 to 169 in '89).
