    Became the first amateur to win a Grand Prix singles title by winning
    Napa in 1981. He also went to the final in his pro debut that year in his
    hometown of Houston, losing to Guillermo Vilas.
    His father, Sammy Sr., was a U.S. Davis Cup player and top 10 in the
    U.S. while brother Tony is a former pro. The two brothers won the Tokyo In-
    door in 1984 and were runner-up in three other Grand Prix finals.
    He won the 1981 U.S. National Juniors.
    Earned a career-high $112,301 in 1985.
    Compiled a 5-11 match record and ranked No. 281 on the ATP computer in
    1989, his sixth top 100 finish in 10 years.
    Enrolled at Rice University in the fall of 1989 and left the circuit.
